Licenses and BOC Exam

  • Every MLS/MLT graduate wishing to become employed needs to apply for a  State of Montana Temporary license. Typically, you will apply for this after you've taken a Comprehensive Exam from  your institution.**

    • Follow this link for more information or to apply for a new license:

  • The State of Montana MLS/MLT licenses expire each year on May 1st.  Additionally, there are 14 required CE units for these licenses. These credits will not be required for your first year of licensure.

  • Upon successfully passing a Comprehensive Final exam through your program, you must also apply to sit for the Board of Certification exam through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Following you will become part of their Certification Maintenance Program (CM). This requires 36 CE credits every 3 years. You will meet this requirement by maintaining your Montana required credits. However, you must claim your 36 credits, additionally, through the ASCP CM BOC Education Dashboard.
